Why Frankincense Is Used in Skincare
Share
Frankincense has long been one of the most valued ingredients in natural skincare, and it is one I return to again and again in my formulations. It appears throughout my work, from whipped body butters and nettle infused butters to face serums and massage candles, because of its remarkable history, its proven benefits for the skin, and its grounding presence within a formulation.
The variety I use is Frankincense Carterii, also known as Boswellia carterii. This is the most expensive and sought after type of frankincense essential oil, prized for its purity, complexity, and therapeutic properties. Frankincense Carterii has been used in skincare and ritual for thousands of years and remains one of the most respected botanical ingredients in modern natural skincare.

The Ancient History of Frankincense in Skincare
Historically, frankincense was considered more valuable than gold. In ancient Egypt it was used in cosmetic preparations, oils, and ceremonial balms designed to protect and preserve the skin. It was believed to support regeneration and longevity, which is why it became a cornerstone ingredient in early skincare traditions. Through trade routes spanning Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, frankincense became central to herbal medicine, perfumery, and botanical skincare practices.
Frankincense in English Folklore and Tradition
In English folklore and traditional practice, frankincense was associated with cleansing, protection, and renewal. It was burned in homes and sacred spaces to purify the air and support wellbeing, particularly during the winter months. These beliefs align closely with its modern use in skincare, where the focus is on calming inflammation, supporting the skin barrier, and encouraging balance rather than forcing change.

Frankincense Carterii Benefits for Skin
The benefits of Frankincense Carterii for the skin are wide ranging. It is known to support healthy cell regeneration, helping to improve skin tone and texture over time. Its natural anti inflammatory properties make it suitable for sensitive, reactive, or mature skin, while its toning effect helps support firmness and elasticity. Frankincense is also valued for its ability to calm the skin, making it a popular ingredient in natural anti ageing skincare and facial oils.
Why I Use Frankincense in Almost Every Skincare Product
I use frankincense so consistently because it works in harmony with the skin. It does not rely on harsh stimulation or short term results. Instead, it supports the skin’s natural processes, making it ideal for long term use across a variety of skincare products. Whether used in a nourishing body butter, a facial serum, or a massage candle, Frankincense Carterii brings continuity, balance, and intention to a formulation.
Frankincense is not included for fragrance alone. It is a functional, time honoured ingredient that reflects a belief in slow skincare, traditional botanical ingredients, and formulations designed to support the skin over time. This is why it remains a foundational element throughout my work and why it continues to be one of the most important ingredients in natural skincare today.
Frankincense is also the base scent in the Earthborn range. Its grounding, resinous aroma creates continuity across the products and supports the overall mood of the collection. If you would like to read more about how the Earthborn range was created, and the inspiration behind it (clue: a magical place tucked away in the Lake District) you can find the full story here.
